all about eels

We went to lake Ellesmere and a man called Clem Smith showed us some eels. They live in lakes and rivers. Mr Smith told us that they mix the lake water with the sea water and let the eels get used to the water because they will make a long journey.

When the time is right the adult eels will swim out to the ocean but the sandy border is in the way so they climb across it ( Fun fact! If eels are wet they can breath out of water!) When they crash into each other on the sand they form a wheel and roll to sea. After days of swimming they get to the warm waters near Hawaii the male eel raps himself around the female and they shed their eggs and then they die

The eggs bob on the current and hatch into larvae the larvae slowly makes their way back by the time they get to lake Ellesmere they have transformed into a transparent eel called a glass eel. They can stay at the lake for as long as possible then they make that same journey.
